NAD+

NAD+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme that transfers electrons and supports many cellular reactions.

NAD+ and its reduced form, NADH, work as a paired electron carrier in energy metabolism. The pair participates in reactions that connect nutrients with cellular energy production. NAD+ is also consumed by enzymes involved in DNA-related processes and cellular signalling. Calling it an energy molecule is shorthand; it is part of a network rather than a direct unit of energy.

Cells make and recycle NAD+ through several pathways using dietary vitamin B3-related precursors and internal salvage processes. Tissue levels, blood measurements, and cellular availability are not interchangeable concepts. A measurement in one compartment does not automatically describe another, and commercial tests may use different methods with different interpretive limits.

NAD+ is often discussed alongside ageing, mitochondrial function, and intravenous therapy. Biological relevance does not by itself establish what an external NAD+ product does in a person. Route, formulation, regulation, and clinical context matter. This entry defines the molecule and avoids making a recommendation about supplementation or administration.

The plus sign indicates the molecule's oxidized state and distinguishes NAD+ from NADH, which carries added electrons. Cells continually move between these forms as reactions proceed. A favourable-sounding ratio in one sample should not be generalized to all tissues, because compartments maintain their own pools and metabolic demands.
