Heart Rate Variability
Heart rate variability is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats rather than the number of beats per minute.

A healthy heart does not beat at perfectly even intervals. Beat-to-beat timing changes as the autonomic nervous system responds to breathing, posture, activity, sleep, emotion, and other demands. Devices calculate HRV from an electrocardiogram or an optical pulse signal, then summarize the intervals with measures such as RMSSD or SDNN. Different metrics and recording lengths are not directly interchangeable.
HRV is highly individual and can shift from day to day. Time of measurement, body position, recent activity, alcohol, illness, menstrual phase, medication, and device quality can influence a reading. For that reason, a person's repeated measurements under similar conditions are often more interpretable than a comparison with a generic population value. A low or high number by itself is not a diagnosis.
HRV is often discussed as one window into autonomic regulation and recovery, but it is not a complete measure of either. Sleep architecture, circadian rhythm, perceived fatigue, workload, and symptoms contribute different information. Consumer wearables can make trends visible, although their algorithms and sensor methods vary. Clinical concerns about rhythm or symptoms require appropriate clinical evaluation rather than reliance on a wearable score.
Breathing has a particularly visible relationship with beat-to-beat timing, which is why short recordings can change when breathing pattern changes. Longer overnight summaries and brief morning measurements are therefore different data products. Comparing them without matching the measurement window, device, and metric can create an apparent trend that comes from method rather than physiology.
