Cold Water Immersion
Cold water immersion is partial or full-body exposure to water below typical skin temperature, often called a cold plunge in wellness settings.
In depth
Water transfers heat away from the body more efficiently than air at the same temperature. Initial immersion can prompt rapid breathing, changes in blood-vessel tone, and shifts in heart rate and blood pressure. The response depends on water temperature, depth, duration, acclimatization, body size, recent activity, and individual health factors.
Cold-water immersion appears in sport and recovery discussions, where people may use it after exertion or as a separate exposure. Soreness, perceived readiness, tissue adaptation, and performance are different outcomes and should not be blended into one claim. Timing relative to training may also matter, which is one reason a universal cold-plunge protocol is not appropriate.
Sudden cold can be hazardous, particularly around unsupervised water, breath-holding, cardiovascular conditions, fainting risk, or impaired sensation. The subjective feeling of alertness after exposure is not a clinical measure. This entry defines the modality but does not specify a temperature, duration, schedule, or suitability for any person.
Cold exposure also causes peripheral blood vessels to narrow as the body attempts to conserve heat. On leaving the water, thermal sensation and circulation continue to change, so the exposure does not end physiologically at the moment of exit. Safe surroundings and the ability to rewarm are therefore part of the context.
