Photobiomodulation
Photobiomodulation is the use of non-ionizing red or near-infrared light to influence biological processes in exposed tissue.
In depth
The term is often used for devices previously described as low-level laser or light therapy. Unlike ultraviolet light or medical imaging radiation, these wavelengths are non-ionizing. Devices may use lasers or light-emitting diodes, and they differ in wavelength, power, beam area, pulsing, distance, and the amount of energy delivered to a given area.
Those parameters make the category difficult to discuss as though every device or session were equivalent. Tissue depth, skin characteristics, target area, exposure geometry, and measurement accuracy can all affect the delivered light. A bright red appearance alone does not establish a device's specifications or whether it has been evaluated for a particular use.
Photobiomodulation is discussed in many clinical and wellness contexts, but a mechanism proposed in cells is not the same as a demonstrated personal outcome. Eye protection, photosensitizing medications or conditions, device status, and the reason for use are relevant considerations. This entry defines the modality and does not supply an exposure plan or endorse a claim.
Dose language in light applications can be confusing because irradiance describes power reaching an area, while fluence describes energy accumulated over time. Two sessions of equal duration can deliver different energy when device power or distance differs. Naming the measured parameter is necessary before exposures can be meaningfully compared.
