Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance describes reduced responsiveness of cells or tissues to a given insulin signal, with effects that vary across organs and metabolic pathways.

Insulin helps coordinate glucose movement, liver glucose output, fat storage, and other processes. Responsiveness is not necessarily identical in muscle, liver, and adipose tissue, and it exists on a continuum. The body may maintain glucose levels by producing more insulin, so glucose and insulin measurements can tell different parts of the story.

Direct research-oriented measurements and practical clinical estimates are not interchangeable. Fasting insulin, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, and glucose-sensor patterns each capture different conditions or time scales. No single marker observes every tissue's response, and temporary factors such as sleep, activity, stress, and illness can influence values.

Insulin resistance is connected conceptually with metabolic syndrome, but the terms are not synonyms. Metabolic syndrome is a defined cluster of measured features, while insulin resistance refers to a physiological response pattern. Interpretation requires the test methods, units, collection state, history, and wider metabolic context.

The related phrase insulin sensitivity describes responsiveness from the opposite direction, but scales and models may define it differently. A change in a surrogate index does not translate automatically into the same-sized change in tissue response. Naming the measurement avoids confusing a proxy with the underlying physiology.

Different tissues contribute distinct processes: skeletal muscle accounts for much glucose uptake after a meal, the liver regulates glucose output, and adipose tissue handles fuel storage and release. A whole-body surrogate cannot isolate each contribution.
