Platelet-Rich Fibrin
Platelet-rich fibrin is an autologous blood preparation in which platelets and other cells are held within a fibrin matrix.
In depth
PRF is prepared by centrifuging a person's blood using a protocol intended to allow a fibrin network to form. Unlike many platelet-rich plasma preparations, it is commonly produced without an added anticoagulant. The resulting material may be liquid initially or form a clot or membrane, depending on processing and timing.
The label covers multiple protocols with different speeds, durations, tubes, cell distributions, and final forms. These technical details can change the preparation. PRF should therefore not be treated as one uniform substance, and it should not be assumed equivalent to PRP merely because both derive from the person's blood and contain platelets.
Fibrin is a structural protein involved in normal clot formation, while platelets participate in clotting and signalling. Those features provide the biological rationale for clinical use, but they do not determine an outcome. Purpose, body site, sterile technique, individual health factors, and the exact preparation remain relevant. This definition does not recommend a procedure.
Processing time is especially important because clot formation begins soon after collection when no anticoagulant is present. Delays can change where cells and platelets become incorporated in the matrix. The practical term PRF therefore describes both a biological material and a time-sensitive preparation process, not merely a brand label.
