Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is a clinical condition characterized by low muscle strength together with reduced muscle quantity or quality, often associated with ageing.

In depth

Modern definitions emphasize strength and physical performance rather than muscle mass alone. Grip strength, chair-rise ability, walking speed, and other functional measures may contribute, while imaging or body-composition tools estimate muscle quantity. Diagnostic frameworks use different thresholds and populations, so terminology should be tied to the criteria being applied.

A DEXA scan can estimate appendicular lean mass, which is the lean tissue in the arms and legs. Lean mass is not a direct measurement of muscle strength, muscle quality, or every component of function. Hydration, body size, device calibration, and analysis methods can affect body-composition estimates. A scan therefore contributes one part of a broader assessment.

Changes in strength or mobility can have many contributors, including activity, nutrition, neurological conditions, joint problems, acute illness, medications, and other medical factors. Sarcopenia should not be inferred from appearance or a single low value. Qualified evaluation considers function, measurements, history, and the relevant diagnostic framework.

Muscle quantity can also be expressed relative to height, weight, or body-mass index, and those adjustments can classify the same raw mass differently. The chosen framework should therefore accompany the result. Functional observation remains important because two people with similar lean mass can have notably different strength and movement capacity.

At Previvo

Previvo lists DEXA scanning in Winnipeg as a service. A DEXA report can provide lean-mass information relevant to the vocabulary of sarcopenia, but it does not by itself supply a complete diagnosis or individualized plan.
