Body composition describes the relative amounts and distribution of fat mass, lean soft tissue, and bone mineral in the body.

Body weight alone cannot show which tissues account for a change. Composition methods separate the body into two, three, or more compartments, depending on the technology. DEXA commonly estimates fat mass, lean soft tissue, and bone mineral, while other methods use electrical impedance, air displacement, skinfolds, or imaging.
Each method rests on assumptions and has its own sources of variation. Hydration, food intake, recent activity, positioning, clothing, device calibration, and analysis software can influence an estimate. Results from different technologies should not be treated as if they are the same measurement, even when the labels look similar.
Distribution can be as relevant as totals. A report may distinguish arms, legs, and trunk or estimate visceral adipose tissue. Lean soft tissue is not identical to skeletal muscle, and fat percentage does not by itself describe metabolic health. Composition is therefore one descriptive layer that can sit beside fitness, functional, and laboratory information.
Changes in absolute kilograms and percentage values answer different questions. A percentage can move because the numerator changed, the denominator changed, or both changed. Reading regional and whole-body values together reduces the chance of mistaking a ratio shift for a direct tissue measurement.
Some reports calculate appendicular lean mass by combining lean-soft-tissue estimates from the arms and legs. This derived value is distinct from total lean mass and still includes non-muscle lean tissue, so the report's exact label should be retained.
