Visceral adipose tissue is fat stored within the abdominal cavity around internal organs, distinct from fat beneath the skin.

Adipose tissue is distributed in several compartments. Subcutaneous fat lies beneath the skin, while visceral fat occupies spaces around abdominal organs. The two compartments differ anatomically and biologically, so overall body-fat percentage cannot identify how much fat is stored in the visceral region.
Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can directly characterize abdominal fat areas, while some whole-body DEXA systems provide an estimate based on the scan and analysis model. Reports may use area, mass, or volume, and those units are not interchangeable. Device model, software version, positioning, and the defined region all matter when comparing results.
Visceral adipose tissue is commonly considered alongside waist measures, blood pressure, glucose-related markers, lipids, and overall body composition. It is an anatomical measurement rather than a diagnosis. A change in body weight also does not reveal which fat compartment changed without a suitable measurement.
Terminology varies across reports. Android-region fat, trunk fat, waist circumference, and visceral-fat estimates are related but not equivalent. Each uses a different boundary or proxy, so values should be named precisely instead of being merged under the general phrase abdominal fat.
A DEXA-derived visceral estimate is produced from a defined abdominal region and a software model; it is not a direct separation of every internal fat deposit. Model versions can therefore matter even when the scanner itself has not changed.
