Biological Age

Biological age is an umbrella term for estimates intended to summarize how age-associated features compare with a reference population.

Chronological age is elapsed time since birth. Biological-age models instead combine one or more measured features, such as DNA methylation, blood markers, physical function, imaging, or physiological signals. The output depends on what the model was trained to represent, so there is no single universal biological-age test.

A result can be expressed in years or as a pace, score, or difference from an expected value. Familiar age units can make a complex model look more literal than it is. The estimate reflects the chosen inputs, algorithm, reference dataset, and measurement conditions; it does not measure every organ or cellular pathway.

Comparisons are most coherent when the same validated method, specimen type, laboratory process, and version are used. Epigenetic clocks are one category within this broader idea. Telomere length, functional measures, and biomarker panels describe other aspects, but they should not be casually combined into a single definitive verdict.

The reference population matters because models learn patterns from specific groups. Performance may differ when age range, ancestry, health context, or specimen type differs from the training data. A responsible report identifies the model rather than presenting biological age as a directly observed property.

Model calibration describes how closely estimated values align with observed values in a relevant population. An output expressed in years can still be poorly calibrated for a different group, which is why the validation population and model purpose belong with the score.
