Epigenetic age is calculated rather than directly observed. An algorithm examines selected chemical marks on DNA, often at many cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites, and compares the pattern with a reference model. Different clocks were designed with different samples, tissues, and outcomes in mind, so two models can return different estimates from similar material.
The number is often compared with chronological age, but the difference is not a diagnosis or a literal count of years gained or lost. Sample type, collection quality, laboratory processing, clock version, reference population, and ordinary analytic variation can all affect the result. Comparisons need the method attached.
Epigenetic age sits within a wider group of biological-age measures. Other models may use blood chemistry, physical function, imaging, or combinations of data. These summaries compress complex biology into a score, which can be useful for description while still leaving many individual pathways and clinical questions unresolved.
A follow-up result can differ because of biological change, sampling variation, laboratory variation, or a model update. Intervals between collections and the expected precision of the assay matter. The decimal places shown on a report may imply more certainty than the entire process supports.
Some reports calculate age acceleration as the difference between modelled epigenetic age and chronological age, while others use a statistical residual adjusted for age. Those quantities can look similar but are calculated differently and should be identified by name.
