Coronary Artery Calcium Score
A coronary artery calcium score is a number derived from a CT scan that estimates the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries.

The scan uses computed tomography to detect calcium in the walls of arteries that supply the heart. Software identifies areas that meet defined density and size thresholds and combines them into a score. The result describes calcified plaque burden; it is not a direct image of every kind of plaque, a measurement of blood flow, or proof that an artery is blocked.
Interpretation depends on age, sex, clinical history, symptoms, and other cardiovascular information. A score of zero means no calcified plaque was detected by that examination, but it does not exclude non-calcified plaque or every cause of chest symptoms. A higher score indicates more detected calcification, yet the number alone does not determine what action is appropriate for an individual.
The calcium score occupies a different role from blood markers such as ApoB, lipoprotein(a), and hs-CRP. Those markers describe circulating particles or inflammation-related signals, while the scan describes visible calcification. A practitioner may consider these sources together because they answer different questions. The test also involves ionizing radiation, so its suitability is a clinical decision rather than a general screening rule.
Calcium scores can also be described as an absolute value or compared with values observed among people of a similar age and sex. Those presentations answer different questions: one describes detected burden, while the other describes relative standing. Neither replaces assessment of symptoms or other cardiovascular information.
