High-sensitivity C-reactive protein, or hs-CRP, is a blood measurement capable of detecting relatively low concentrations of an inflammation-associated protein.

C-reactive protein is produced mainly by the liver in response to inflammatory signalling. A high-sensitivity assay measures the same protein as a standard CRP test but is designed for precision at lower concentrations. The word high-sensitivity describes the assay, not a more sensitive person or a distinct protein.
The value is nonspecific. Infection, injury, inflammatory activity, recent strenuous exercise, and other temporary circumstances can influence it. A single elevated result does not identify the source, duration, or mechanism, and it is not a direct measure of plaque or arterial anatomy.
When hs-CRP is considered in cardiovascular context, it sits alongside lipoproteins, blood pressure, glucose-related markers, history, and other information. Collection timing, laboratory method, units, and repeated values can matter. A number should not be interpreted as a complete account of inflammation across the body.
CRP concentration can change over a relatively short period when the underlying signal changes. That makes collection context especially important. If values from different dates are compared, temporary illness or injury and differences between laboratories should remain visible rather than being treated as noise-free trend data.
High analytic sensitivity allows the assay to quantify low CRP concentrations more precisely, but it does not make the protein specific to one source of inflammation. Analytic sensitivity and biological specificity are separate ideas that should not be conflated.
