Lactate Threshold

Lactate threshold is an exercise-intensity boundary around which blood lactate begins to accumulate faster than the body can clear or reuse it.

Lactate is continually produced and used as part of normal energy metabolism. During increasingly hard exercise, production and clearance can shift until blood concentration rises more sharply. The word threshold simplifies a response that is often gradual, and different testing methods may identify slightly different points on that curve.

A laboratory assessment may pair staged exercise with small blood samples or infer threshold-related regions from breathing gases. Reports may express the result as a heart rate, pace, power output, or oxygen-use level. Those values depend on the exercise mode and the protocol used, so a cycling result and a running result are not automatically interchangeable.

Lactate threshold is related to, but distinct from, VO2 max. VO2 max describes peak aerobic oxygen use, whereas threshold describes where a meaningful metabolic transition occurs below or near that peak. Day-to-day readiness, recent activity, nutrition, temperature, and equipment can influence a single measurement, which is why the surrounding test conditions belong in any interpretation.

Some reports identify more than one transition, using terms such as first and second threshold or aerobic and anaerobic threshold. Naming the method is important because these labels are not applied identically across laboratories, sports settings, or devices.
