VO2 max is the highest rate at which the body can take in, transport, and use oxygen during progressively harder exercise.

The measurement brings several systems into one number. Breathing moves oxygen into the lungs, the heart and blood vessels deliver it, and working muscles use it to produce energy. A limitation at any point can influence the result. VO2 max is usually expressed relative to body mass so that values can be interpreted in context, although the raw oxygen-use value may also be reported.
A direct assessment commonly uses a fitted mask while workload increases on a treadmill or cycle. The equipment measures inhaled and exhaled gases, while heart rate and perceived effort provide additional context. The final value is not a diagnosis by itself. Exercise mode, test duration, familiarity, current health, and whether a true maximal effort was reached all affect interpretation.
VO2 max differs from lactate threshold and spirometry. Lactate threshold describes a change in metabolic response during exercise, while spirometry measures airflow and lung volumes. Looking at these concepts together can help explain why two people with a similar headline VO2 max may have different exercise responses or test curves.
A report may also show the workload and heart rate reached at peak effort. These provide context for the measured oxygen-use curve rather than changing what VO2 max itself means.
