Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis is a non-surgical aesthetic procedure that applies controlled cooling to a selected area of subcutaneous fat.

In depth

The procedure uses an applicator to cool tissue within set parameters. It is designed around the differing responses of fat cells and surrounding tissues to controlled cold exposure. Cryolipolysis is used for localized body contouring; it is not the same as weight loss, a DEXA body-composition assessment, or cold-water immersion.

Consultation generally considers the target area, applicator fit, skin and tissue characteristics, medical history, expectations, and contraindications. Temporary sensations or local changes can occur, and uncommon complications are also part of informed consent. Exact risks and device information should come from the qualified provider and current manufacturer or regulatory materials.

Body composition describes the proportions and distribution of tissues across the body, whereas cryolipolysis addresses a selected superficial area for aesthetic contouring. Visceral adipose tissue is located deeper around internal organs and is a different concept. Keeping these terms separate helps avoid interpreting an aesthetic procedure as a metabolic assessment or broad change in health.

The applicator typically draws tissue into a cooling cup or contacts it through a shaped surface, depending on the device and area. That geometry affects which tissue is exposed. A consultation therefore considers whether the selected area can be engaged appropriately rather than relying only on a person's overall weight or body-composition category.
