Gait analysis is the systematic observation or measurement of walking or running patterns across time, distance, joint motion, and force.

A basic analysis may record step length, cadence, speed, stance time, and symmetry. Instrumented approaches can add video, joint-angle estimates, foot-pressure maps, ground-reaction forces, or muscle-activity signals. Each technology captures a particular layer, and no single measure represents the whole movement.
Walking and running are context dependent. Footwear, surface, incline, speed, fatigue, instructions, pain at the time, and familiarity with a treadmill can influence the pattern. Comparisons are most meaningful when the task and equipment are kept consistent and when normal person-to-person variability is acknowledged.
An observed asymmetry or pressure pattern is a finding rather than a complete explanation. Gait is influenced by the nervous system, joints, muscles, balance, perception, and task demands. A biomechanical assessment may place gait observations alongside range of motion and other functional measurements to develop a fuller description.
Temporal measures describe when events occur, and spatial measures describe distances. Kinematic and kinetic data add joint motion and force. A report should distinguish directly measured variables from values estimated by software, especially when comparing two sessions or two technologies.
A gait cycle is commonly divided into stance, when the foot contacts the ground, and swing, when it advances through the air. Event detection defines the boundaries, so camera observation, pressure sensors, and force platforms may mark timing somewhat differently.
